Mi Orgullo

By Kimberli Etienne

I am Haitian,

Caribbean country and joy

A country where trumpets are

Heard at night, some celebrate

The religion of their ancestors

With euphoria

I am perseverance, sweat,

And work.

I am from the Caribbean heat and happiness.

I am banana, bean, rice, and

Legume,

I am from Kompa that

Makes my heart happy

I am from the country

Where the roosters

lift you up when they sing

They are from Haiti

Where the audacity of our ancestors is celebrated

Every May 18 with pride and passion
